The conclusion of the
2025 WDRA Summit World Championships presented by SunCoast
Performance occurred on Saturday, where beautiful weather and no
major mechanical malfunctions created an efficient day of
competition. The top representatives from WDRA racetracks across the
United States and Canada, as well as eligible main event champions
from the regional WDRA Summit Bracket Finals presented by Laris
Motorsports Insurance, gathered at Montgomery International Dragway
for their chance at a World Championship title.
Everyone on the premises filled up on a free steak dinner Friday
night following the $5K Gamblers Races and earned a good night’s
rest prior to the main event. Following a time trial session, the
intensity of eliminations began. Any mistake would send the racer
home without the cushion of buybacks, and those who could withstand
the pressure would be cemented into history. For those who earned
the first-round runner-up, $300 was awarded to assist with towing
costs and to recognize their accomplishment of qualifying. At the
end of the evening, the victors earned the coveted World
Championship title, thousands of cash payouts, a WDRA Champion card,
and the WDRA Rod Trophy. The second place drivers would take home a
laser-engraved piston courtesy of MAHLE Motorsport North America to
go along with their cash.
No Box World Championship
No Box competitors had a $20,000 winning payout while the runner up
would take home $5,000. The quarterfinalists were Matt Luckett, Ben
McIntosh, Bobby Mattera, Mason Fix, Brian Yerger Jr, and Zach
Livingston. Fix illuminated the dreaded red bulb beside Luckett, who
wheelied into the next round. Both drivers ran one above their
respective dial ins, but Livingston’s .012 reaction time earned him
the .028 margin of victory. Yerger fouled at the start while Mattera
ran dead on his 5.67 dial in for the win. In the semifinal, Mattera
was .015 and ran dead-on again to take the win over Luckett who was
.026 and one above his dial. Livingston, representing Eddyville
Raceway Park, earned the best bye run of the event to secure his
spot in the final round.
Livingston had the reaction time advantage with a .019 in the final,
however the Buick Opal driven by Mattera was dead-on for the third
pass in a row to earn the Summit No Box World Championship with a
.013 margin of victory. Mattera swept the accomplishments this
season as Maryland International Raceway’s Summit Sportsman Drag
Racing Series Champion and claimed the No Box main event victory
during the WDRA Summit Eastern Bracket Finals.
