MECHANICSVILLE, MARYLAND (October
1st, 2024) - An unpredictable
weather forecast forced the
cancellation of the Burchoil
Superchargers as it was not feasible
to run a 3-day event with showers
and thunderstorms called for on
Friday and Sunday. But Saturday
looked to have a dry enough window
to get Top Sportsman along with Top
ET and Mod ET for the 1320
Fabrication ET Series presented by
East Coast Collision in with
Championships on the line along with
the Ricks Jewelers Ring for the
Queen. Saturday morning the MIR
staff would arrive, and track drying
would begin after multiple days of
rain. Just after 1130am, the track
would go live for Championship
Saturday.
Top ET
The
Top ET championship would come down
to a two-horse race for the one-day
event. Jeffery Jones would come into
the morning with a 71-point lead
over 2nd place Mickey Nelson. The
big question would be how many
rounds would the Top ET class have?
As first round would begin, Jones
would start things off with a round
win over Billy Thomas. After
Re-Entry, Top ET would end up being
a 7-round race. With Jones winning
first round in a seven-round race,
Jones was able to secure his first
ever Top ET Championship at MIR!
Jones would be eliminated in 3rd
round with a –.007 red light.
Mod ET
The
Mod ET Championship would see 2x Mod
ET Champion Bobby Mattera, Keven
Yates, and 2x Mod ET Champion Jake
Milstead all have a shot at the
championship. Mattera would hold a
21-point lead over Yates, and a
70-point lead over Milstead. Mod
would also end up being a 7-round
race, but in a surprise to many,
Bobby Mattera would be out first
round. This would bust the door open
for Yates and Milstead. Yates would
go out 2nd round to a tough Joe
Goldey and be behind by 11 points.
And all eyes would fall to Jake
Milstead who would have to win the
race to take the lead by one point
over Mattera. Milstead would line up
next to Louis “Kip” Green in Mod ET
in 2nd round and Milstead would fall
to Green. With both Yates and
Milstead bowing out in 2nd round,
Bobby Mattera would be announced as
the 2024 Mod ET Champion! This is
Mattera’s 4 championship after
winning a Top ET Championship in
1991, plus two Mod ET Championship
in 2015 and again in 2020.
Junior Dragster
The
Junior Dragster Championship was
secured the last time the Hubble
Motorsports Junior Dragsters raced
back on September 22nd at the 1320
Fabrication ET Series Summer Blowout
presented by East Coast Collision.
At the end of Saturday, the points
would shape up to appear that as
long as Austin Keys would tech in
for his 20 points on Sunday, he
would secure his first ever ET
Series Championship. Car count would
stay the same from Saturday into
Sunday and right at the end of first
round, Keys would be declared as the
2024 Hubble Motorsports Junior
Dragster Champion! Keys had an
impressive 2024 with three wins this
year and was one of the strongest
racers for a majority of the season.
While this would be Keys first
championship it is not his first
major accolade as he also won the
Rick’s Jewelers Ring for the Queen
in 2023 becoming the second ever
Junior Dragster racer to do so in
the 20-year history of the program.
